For this class assignment on my journalism course we had to write a personal short piece about a class visit we took to the BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio. It was super fun, and we got to chat to various presenters, producers, broadcast journalists and so on.
---
The BBC – a small acronym with a big impact. Known worldwide for its efficiency and influence in the media world, the BBC is the crème de la crème of journalism, and the top rung of the ladder I have just started to climb.
So the question on my mind for the visit was – how do I get there?
One producer started as the station’s telephone operator, one broadcast journalist began in a local newspaper, and one researcher was offered permanent employment after completing a work placement at the station as part of her media qualification.
Their casual explanation of their route to the BBC, however, made me wonder that maybe the lucky ones don't realise just how lucky they are.
Many long hours, countless applications and wasted trees into a ‘career’, with a decade of dedication and an impressive CV to show for it, but not a glimmer of hope in sight for those still at the bottom of the ladder.
Is it really all about the lucky break?
But the visit did anything but dampen my spirits. It only made me more certain of where I want to be and more determined to get there. “Bug people”, one journalist stated, “beg, sell yourself, and don’t give up.”
One day I will be a small part of that small acronym, making a big impact.
